Find Scholar development, debate cards and crafting
Open Careers → Scholar after completing its introduction. Choose the part of the career you want to improve rather than spending the first material the menu offers.

Before a debate, inspect the selected style and its cards. Read at least one affordable attack, one way to preserve Mental Focus and any Inspiration-related effect. Scholar development and a well-understood deck solve different problems.
The debate tutorial and career unlock are separate
Gift of Gab is the debate activity; Scholar is the career that develops your use of it. Winning an introductory argument does not mean every career feature is already available. Check the career page for its remaining conditions after completing the tutorial.

Read the two resources before playing cards

This is a timed card contest. Do not assume the opponent will wait while you study your whole hand. Read unfamiliar card descriptions before challenging a difficult opponent, and start with a manageable practice debate.
A practical plan for the first few debates
Begin by identifying one affordable attack and one defensive or recovery option. Use an effect only when you understand what it buys: direct damage, a stronger later card or time to recover. Spending all your Inspiration immediately can leave you unable to respond to pressure.
When your Mental Focus is low, compare the likely finish with the likely incoming damage. A small attack is poor value if the opponent survives and defeats you before your next action. Conversely, repeatedly defending when one attack would end the debate wastes the opening.
These are learning priorities, not a fixed winning sequence. Your available cards, style and opponent change the right play.
Choose a style and develop the career
Scholar offers debate styles with different card behaviour, including Bluster, Rebuttal, Provocation and Filibuster. Inspect the opponent and the style descriptions before entering. Learn one style’s resource loop first, then compare another using similar opponents.
Career progression and mastery expand what you can do; they are separate from your weapon’s combat mastery. After a successful debate, check the Scholar page for completed objectives and available upgrades rather than assuming the rewards applied to your combat build.
Diagnose a loss before repeating it

Finish the introduction rather than stopping at the first debate
- Complete the earlier Gift of Gab introduction and meet the Scholar quest’s requirements.
- Track Legacy: Scholar’s Path and follow its Yan Huaijin objective in the Deepforage Grove area of Moonveil Mountain.
- Follow the quest to its debate and any subsequent conversation.
- Return or report as the tracked objective requests.
- Open Careers → Scholar and confirm the career controls are available.
If you can use Gift of Gab but the career remains locked, inspect the Legacy quest’s current step. Access to a debate is not proof that the separate career introduction has been fully handed in.
Read a debate in real time
Gift of Gab does not pause while you consider every card. First learn where Mental Focus and Inspiration are shown, then practise a small set of cards you can recognise quickly. Watch for the response prompt instead of staring only at the hand.

Choose one improvement after a loss. For example, if you repeatedly missed a response while reading card descriptions, learn those descriptions before restarting. A larger collection of unfamiliar cards would add more decisions without fixing that timing problem.
A worked example: upgrade the card or the career?
Suppose a dependable card is ready for an upgrade but your Scholar tier is unchanged. Open that card’s details and inspect its Gift of Gab Notes requirement. Career Notebooks belong to a different progression screen. Buy or earn the material shown by the exact upgrade you intend to perform.
After upgrading, verify that the card is present in the style you use. For talismans, take a separate pass through the recipe: check its effect, ingredients and any Stamina cost, then craft only the quantity you expect to use. The crafting result is not a new debate card.
