Combat beginner guide: controls, deflection, resources and healing

Learn the combat controls, read attack cues and resource bars, practise a reliable loop and recover safely before adding complex combos.

The quick answer

Combat rewards reading attacks, protecting your resources and using the opening after enemy Qi breaks. Deflect red-warning strikes, dodge yellow or gold-warning attacks, and punish safely. Learn a short, reliable sequence before adding weapon swaps and Mystic Skills.

Find the essential controls before adding more skills

Open Settings and inspect the controls for your current input device. Find lock-on, light attack, heavy attack, guard/deflect, dodge, weapon swap, medicine and your equipped Mystic Skills. Use the bindings displayed by your client rather than mixing instructions from different platforms.

  1. Choose an ordinary enemy or an available practice activity.
  2. Lock on and move around the target without attacking.
  3. Watch one complete attack pattern and identify its final hit.
  4. Practise a defensive response, then add one short attack.
  5. Stop the sequence while you still have a way to avoid the next strike.

If a move listed in your Martial Art cannot be performed, check its Basic Talent and development requirements. A missing action unlock is different from a mistimed input.

Read the attack, then answer it

Cue or situationStarting response
Red warningUse a timed deflection; holding a normal guard is not the same response.
Yellow or gold warningAvoid the attack: ordinary guard and deflection do not stop this warning type.
Ordinary attackRead its animation and learn a defensive response.
Several strikes in a sequenceStay defensive until the sequence is actually finished.

A flash tells you what kind of response to prepare; it does not replace timing. Reacting instantly to every early warning can make you dodge or deflect before the attack arrives. Watch the enemy’s weapon, body movement and final approach.

For a boss-specific jump, interaction or arena mechanic, follow that encounter’s prompt rather than reducing every attack to a colour rule. After responding, keep watching: the warning may introduce a sequence with several separate hit timings.

If your deflections behave differently with assistance enabled, inspect Star Shift and its resource rules.

Use the Qi break as a planned opening

Successful defensive play helps pressure enemy Qi. When that Qi is depleted, the enemy becomes Exhausted and an Execute opportunity can appear. This is a different condition from simply reducing its HP.

Plan a punish you can complete without fumbling. Start with a short attack sequence and the available Execute, then experiment as you learn the encounter. If you delay a finishing action to fit in more damage, watch the recovery state carefully; an ambitious sequence is not useful if you lose the opening entirely.

Leave yourself a way out

Do not spend your entire Endurance budget merely because the enemy is currently standing still. Your next defensive action may matter more than the final attack in a combo. Likewise, consider the resource cost before adding an offensive Mystic Skill to every opening.

A useful practice rule is to finish your attack while you still feel in control. If every attempt ends with frantic repeated dodges, shorten the sequence. The goal is to recognise the enemy’s next action instead of discovering it while locked into your own.

Learn a difficult fight in three passes

  1. Observation pass: stay close enough to see attacks, but focus on surviving one complete pattern.
  2. Response pass: practise the correct answer to the move that most often hits you.
  3. Punish pass: add one short attack sequence after the safe opening.

Keep the same build during these attempts unless you discover a clear equipment problem. Changing several systems after every defeat hides whether your timing is improving. If you can identify the exact mistake, the attempt has already given you a useful next step.

For a repeatable practice environment, open Wandering Paths → Arena → Arena Practice. It includes defensive and combo exercises. Practise the troublesome response there before returning to ranked matches; PvE bosses can still have their own mechanics.

Adjust your habits for the activity

In a group fight, your safe position also depends on what teammates need to do. Avoid chasing personal damage through an assigned mechanic or dragging danger into other players. Learn the activity’s instructions before assuming a familiar solo boss pattern behaves identically.

Against players, expect hesitation, movement and deliberate baiting. A sequence that works on a predictable enemy can be punished by someone who waits for its ending. Use short exchanges, observe the opponent’s defensive choices and change one decision at a time.

Practical guides

Know which bar you are reacting to

Bar or indicatorQuestion it answersUseful response
Your HPHow close are you to defeat?Create a safe healing opportunity.
Enemy HPHow much of the fight remains?Keep using safe openings instead of rushing the last hit.
Enemy QiHow close is a break or Exhausted opening?Prepare a reliable punish for the break.
EnduranceCan you afford the next movement or attack?Shorten the sequence before you lose defensive options.
VitalityCan you afford the selected Mystic Skill?Reserve it for the action you planned.

Check these between exchanges rather than staring at them through the enemy’s wind-up. You need enough attention on the actual animation to time the response.

Practise a complete defensive loop

Try this learning exercise: watch the first attack, respond, wait for the sequence to finish, land a short punish, then return to a ready position. Repeat the loop before adding a second weapon or another skill. Your success condition is staying in control, not the largest possible damage number.

For a multi-hit pattern, the first successful deflect is not permission to stop watching. Count the remaining strikes by their animation. If you repeatedly get hit after your first response, remove the punish until you can identify the real end of the pattern.

A focused optional duel gives you a place to practise teleport timing and arena positioning.

Make healing part of the plan

Before entering, inspect the selected medicine and ready charges. During the fight, choose a moment when the enemy is committed elsewhere or recovering. If you heal while the next strike is already arriving, the new HP may disappear before you can act again.

If a Boundary Stone does not refill your charges, check reserve medicine in the Bag. If an illness remains after your HP is restored, that needs its own treatment route. These are different problems from the timing of the heal input.

Common questions

Should I dodge every attack?

Dodging is useful, but learning deflection opportunities also helps pressure enemy Qi. Use the appropriate response and preserve enough resources to handle the next action.

Why do I still get hit after a successful response?

You may have answered only the first strike of a longer sequence. Watch the complete pattern and delay your punish until you recognise its ending.
